EVICTION PREVENTION PROGRAM

The following programs provide up to 15 months of rental assistance to Illinois residents who meet the income criteria. Help is available regardless of your immigration status.

Illinois Rental Payment Program (ILRPP)

Rental assistance up to $25,000

  • Live in Illinois
  • Household has experienced a financial hardship
  • At risk of eviction, homelessness or housing instability

Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP)

Rental and utility assistance (no max.)

Tenants or landlords can begin the application process and submit documents

Illinois Housing Help Rental

To apply, you must receive a referral from an IDHS partner 312-793-1546 / IDHS partners will assist you in applying

  • Behind on rent at least 30 days
  • Live in Illinois
  • Household has experienced a financial hardship
  • At risk of eviction, homelessness or housing instability

Document Check List

  • Government-issued photo ID, proof of address
  • Monthly rent and amount past-due
  • Copy of lease or rental agreement
  • Proof of household income in 2020
  • Tax returns W-2s, 1099s, paystubs
  • Income attestation (if paid in cash)
  • Proof of public assistance (if applicable)
  • Proof of immigration status is NOT required

* Household has experienced a financial hardship due to the pandemic / Under 80% of the Area Median Income

* SSN or ITIN is not required for tenants to apply – If lease is not available, the landlord can write an affidavit

* Examples of hardship due to COVID-19; Out of work, reduction in hours at work, loss of spousal/child support.

As a tenant, you have the right to:

Not be discriminated against:

  • Landlords cannot use your immigration status to intimidate or threaten to call ICE, evict you or shut off utilities.

A habitable home

  • You have a right to essential services and emergency repairs for heat, water, and electricity.

Privacy

  • Except for emergencies, landlords cannot enter your home without notice: Cook County (48 hours notice) Outside of Cook County (24 hours notice)

Receive proper notice

  • Landlords must provide 30, 60 or 120 days’ notice to not renew a lease, even if it is month-to-month. Document all communication with your landlord in writing!

REMEMBER: ONLY the local sheriff may enforce an eviction order and remove tenants from a property! Landlords cannot lock tenants out. Local police cannot evict anyone!
